July 2007

How wonderful, on a sunny July morning, to wake early, and with cup of tea in hand, go out into the garden to soak up the jewel colours and sounds of bird song before the day begins in earnest.

This is when I can study, undisturbed, the structure of a flower, markings on a petal, or the effect of slanting sunlight on a fresh new leaf. Time also to make sketches and mental notes for new illustrations aand to plan my day’s work in the studio – how much easier it is to confront schedules and time-lines in the calm of a quiet morning.

This month, the garden will be taking back- stage because I am busy working to deadlines for dated products for 2009. it always amazes me how far in advance my publishers, like gardeners, need to plan ahead. In my case I can’t wait to receive my order for 8 Tulipa acuminata bulbs and seeing them in flower next Spring!
