September 2007

Autumn is nearly with us and the garden is beginning to glow with rich russets, coppers and golds. I’m looking forward to my big annual clear-up and to taking a long hard look at this year’s planting.

Now is the time to assess the strengths and weaknesses of current plant combinations and you will find me outside, garden journal in hand, making notes and sketches as reminders of the colours and shapes that work well together and those that definitely do not!

Iris sibirica and Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’ are two of my spring and autumn favourites and I am planning to lift, divide and re-distribute the larger clumps to increase their presence next year. Already I am imagining the effect and I suspect that it is this evolving process of change and anticipation that makes the creation of a garden so absorbing an occupation.
