August 2008

Ah the power of sunshine!
Sadly it was in short supply even in France this summer but despite this the sunflowers still opened, the melons and peaches still ripened, and once again I relished my fix of French abundance and restorative time spent with family and friends.
Here in the garden, in late August, loose clusters of acid yellow flowers of Helianthus salicifolius ‘Lemon Queen’ are creating the illusion, if not the reality, that summer is still with us. This late flowering perennial will continue to bloom well into autumn and does well in partial shade, despite its name.

Tolerant of most soil types, it grows best in clay loam which is good news for all of us who live in London.
Try it for yourself and next year enjoy the sunshine in your garden for just a little longer!
