September 2008

Autumn is here, apples are ready to pick and now is a good time to look back at notes, sketches and photos taken through previous months to help you to decide what changes are needed for next year.
At Capel Manor Horticultural College we were taught that once a plant had ‘outlived its useful life’ we should not hesitate to remove it and although this may seem brutal I do believe it is the right course of action to take. All too often we just put up with tired, leggy plants just because they are there, (as lavenders to left of photo) and these are best replaced now, before the onset of winter and while the earth is still warm.
For those of you interested in the principles of planting design I thoroughly recommend a newly published book ‘The Complete Planting Design Course’ by Hilary Thomas - ex Capel lecturer, which is full of sound ideas and advice.
