December 2009

Today, looking from the window my garden is under wraps, still covered with a thick blanket of snow. The sight is enchanting but until the thaw I won’t know the full consequences of such prolonged severe weather and I am not looking forward to finding out!

I can already see casualties and though many treasures are safely tucked away in the shed or tiny greenhouse, limited space has meant that other things have not been so fortunate. Scented-leaved geraniums that have happily survived previous winters in pots on the balcony are now in a very sorry state indeed.

I can imagine fellow gardeners all across the country will soon, like me, be counting their losses ruefully on one hand, whilst with reluctant optimism, dreaming of replacements on the other.

‘Out with the old and in with the new’ may prove a particularly apt saying for January 2010. Happy new planting all!
