January 2009

Despite the wintery start to the New Year there is evidence that spring is on its way. Early primroses are beginning to flower and bulbs are pushing through the frozen soil, filling me with a sense of renewal and hope for the year ahead.

Gardens all around the country will soon

be holding events inspired by the much-
loved snowdrop Galanthus nivalis.
Click here to find a garden near you and
if you live near enough, do visit the theBeth Chatto Garden near Colchester to
see the incredible annual tapestry of early spring flowers and bulbs there.

In Scotland, over 200 varieties of
snowdrops and snowflakes grow in the
woodland gardens of the Cambo Estate
and you can buy rare and unusual
varieties ‘in the green’ through their mail
order service. A friend and I shared an
order last year and I am now eagerly
waiting for them to come into flower.
