July 2009

The stronger light of July seems to go hand in hand with the rich, vibrant colours now unfolding in the summer garden.

Thyme, lavender and flowering herbs in the raised herb bed are attracting intense activity and on sunny days especially my garden is alive with bees and butterflies. Particularly welcome visitors this year are a colony of Tree Bumblebees Bombus hypnorum that have purloined a nesting box more usually occupied by a family of blue tits.

At a time when disease is decimating our managed honeybees it is more important than ever to look after our wild pollinators. To identify bumblebees in your own garden and learn which plants to grow to encourage them do visit the Bumblebee Conservation Trust website which is full of interesting facts and information.
