April 2010

Spring is truly here and although I am spoilt for choice for subjects, it is unexpected surprises that have most caught my attention this month.

Forget-me-nots have self-seeded all around the garden and bright-eyed violas that I thought were long lost have reappeared in unexpected corners. Back-lit in the sunshine their petals look as richly transparent as a stained glass window.
The sight of water drops caught in the fresh new leaves of Alchemilla mollis is always a delight but a pair of blue tits bathing enthusiastically amongst them was a real first time treat.
In the shady far end of the garden Fritillaria meleagris are starting to form nice clumps. Possibly thanks to a severe winter I have found fewer of the dreaded lily beetles that plague them this year.

Elsewhere, herbaceous plants are shooting, ferns are unfurling and I can barely keep up with the weeding!
