December 2010

Nature’s gift in December was a thick blanket of snow that transformed the garden into a virtual Christmas card, leaving me free to enjoy an extended holiday with family and friends against a magical winter backdrop.
Now, writing this page in the first week of January, milder weather has returned and I have been able to survey the effects of such extreme conditions. Tender shoots of evergreen Ceonothusare frazzled and lifeless and in a sheltered spot by the greenhouse, leaves of potted arum lilies that in milder winters survive, are just a sorry mash. Areas of brick paving have succumbed to the harsh frosts and a really good clear up is top on the list of gardening tasks for January.
Despite the damage, at the far end of the garden, through the kindness of a friend three mature Taxus are beginning to mask the presence of the new building. Bulbs are pushing through the earth, birds are singing, new trellis is planned and the season of renewal has begun.
