March 2010

All things must pass – thankfully winter included, but sadly also the driftwood ‘throne’ in my garden. Living so close to parkland we often hear woodpeckers hammering in the trees, but were surprised to discover the throne has become a victim. This, and the effects of winter have taken their toll and its days are numbered.

Elsewhere in the garden, spring is most definitely here. Herbaceous clumps are emerging and mulching the beds has been a priority this month. Spanish bluebells with which I wage war are shooting up as fast as I can dig them out. Each year I think I have removed the last of these deep-rooted bulbs and each year the battle starts once again.

Other self-seeders are more than welcome and forget-me-nots and spreading clumps of primroses and Parma violets – nature’s gifts this time, are thankfully received. The clocks soon go forward and the gardening year begins again. Hurray!
