May 2010

Ah…and what a glorious May it has been, full of blossom, burgeoning growth and lots of sunny, rain-free days.

My garden started the month gently enough in a froth of pale Aquilegias, gathered steam with the jewel-colours of Allium ’Purple Sensation’ and Iris sibirica and ended on a high with scarlet oriental poppies and the magnificent deep purple flowers of aptly named Iris ’Black Swan’.

Arguably ‘the’ plant of Chelsea Flower Show this year, clumps of delicate Iris sibirica featured in many of the show gardens both big and small and a row of 3 pots filled with rust-coloured Iris ‘Action Front’ was the focal point of Andy Sturgeon’s Telegraph Garden which won Best in Show.
The specialist nursery Woottons of Wenhaston have a huge selection available and you can see full growing instructions, plant descriptions and photos on their website.
