January 2012

Clicking back through my diary pages I can’t quite believe it is five years since the first entry. Looking at the pictures, (admittedly through rose tinted specs) I find myself feeling sad and nostalgic for times past and days gone by.

Paradoxically it is change and the natural cycle of the unfolding seasons that force me back into the present when the sight of first primroses and their promise of spring bring a rush of unexpected optimism even on the darkest of days. This must surely be one of the great gifts of nature.

Looking around the bare garden, I find myself fearing for our fence unless action is taken on the Clematis tangutica which grows along its trellis and threatens it with imminent collapse. All through winter I have ignored the problem and relished instead its tangled whorls of fluffy seed-heads but early spring is the ideal time to prune it back hard and the deed must be done.
