Writing this diary page retrospectively, I have to admit that in a month in which indoor tasks took precedence, I didn’t spend much time in my garden.
The sight of our newly decorated sitting room is my reward, and freshly brainwashed into a subtle Farrow and Ball mind-set, even the monochrome view from the window seems in perfect harmony!

Storms have blown all but the last leaves from the trees and it is the tracery of bare branches against a leaden sky that capture my attention. Sombre evergreen shrubs provide structure now that flowering herbaceous plants have disappeared but after so little gardening it seems only right to picture things that have captivated me elsewhere. A visit to Great Dixter gave me the peacock topiary and and a South Coast beach garden, the driftwood sculpture. I photographed the trees and bark in Kew Gardens and the cobbled walls in Norfolk – all going to show that it is not only plants that make a garden sing…
